There has been some union activity outside CUB’s Abbotsford brewery and the corporate office at Southbank in recent weeks. While there is no impact to beer supply the noise and disruption has impacted local residents and businesses.
In 2009 CUB outsourced its maintenance services at Abbotsford – at the time the fitters and electricians impacted were given their full entitlements, including redundancies. Many went on to work for the company awarded the contract to supply maintenance services to the brewery.
In January this year CUB advised the contractor, their employees and the unions that the contract with Quant would not be extended beyond July. CUB went out to market on a commercial tender for a new contract for these services. In June the maintenance service contract between CUB and Quant ended; a company named Programmed was announced as the new provider as a result of a competitive tender.
This change impacted 55 tradies who have been paid all entitlements, including redundancy and pay in lieu of notice by their employer Quant.
With any change of contract, we understand our commercial decisions can impact people and their families; that’s why CUB gave six months’ notice of the end of the contract and people affected were paid redundancies by their employer.
