Proudly Tasmanian: Cascade celebrates 200 years with 200 free beers

Two proudly Tasmanian icons – AFL triple-premiership player Jack Riewoldt and the Cascade Brewery – have launched Cascade’s 200th birthday celebrations at Hobart’s Customs House Hotel.

To mark the historic occasion, Cascade will shout one free beer for the first 200 people at different pubs on the first Friday of the month for the rest of 2024.

From March participating pubs will be given a Cascade bell to ring at 4pm to tell patrons they can get a free schooner of Cascade Draught, Cascade Lager, or Cascade Pale Ale.

The historic Customs House Hotel on the Hobart waterfront will host the first round on Friday March 1.

Born and raised Hobartian Jack Riewoldt said:

“It’s great to be in my hometown to commemorate a historic Tasmanian brand that’s been at the centre of celebrations for many generations. To be in business 200 years is incredible and I hope all Tasmanian beer lovers raise a glass to Cascade for this special birthday.

“It’s a pleasure to offer my fellow Tasmanians a free beer to help celebrate. I reckon the only thing better than a cold Cascade is a free cold Cascade!”

The Claremont Hotel in Claremont and Post Street Social in Hobart will host in April and May respectively. Venues for the following months will be announced on Cascade Brewery’s website and social media in the days leading up to each event. The offer is strictly limited to one free beer, per person, per venue.

Carlton & United Breweries’ Tasmanian Sales Manager Matthew McGowan said:

“Cascade is not only Australia’s oldest brewery, but also one of Australia’s oldest businesses. Cascade beer has stood the test of time and holds a revered place in the hearts and minds of Tasmanians. We thank Tasmanian beer lovers for their loyalty.”

Cascade Brewery is also releasing commemorative Cascade Draught 375mL cans emblazoned with the words “Standing proud for 200 years”.

The 200-year celebrations will keep flowing throughout 2024, with more details to be announced soon.

ABOUT CASCADE

The Cascade story began in 1824 when pioneering industrialists Peter Degraves and Hugh Macintosh used a 2000-acre grant to establish a sawmill on the lower slopes of Kunanyi/Mount Wellington in South Hobart. But, eight years later, and after Degraves had served a stint in gaol, Degraves and Macintosh created a brewery on the site. Notwithstanding the site didn’t commence brewing until 1832, we’re proud to be celebrating 200 years of Cascade in 2024.

Cascade Brewery is Australia’s oldest brewery and a leading tourist destination. It is also a vital part of the Tasmanian community, employing more than 80 people across the brewery and bar and supporting hundreds of local businesses. It stands as a unique example of Australia’s industrial heritage.

The original historic homestead remains and is home to the Cascade Brewery Bar. Its doors and heritage beer garden are open to the public seven days a week, serving up the best of Tasmania in a glass, on a plate and accompanied by our warm Hobart hospitality.
