Asahi Beverages is today announcing the Green Beacon brewery in Geebung, north Brisbane, will cease operations in around 10 weeks.

The closure follows several years of strong growth for Green Beacon and is part of a plan to ensure it continues its strong trajectory by increasing brewing capacity across multiple sites.

Under the plan, Asahi Beverages will invest in Green Beacon’s original site at the brewpub in Teneriffe to add brewing capacity. Most Green Beacon brewing will be transferred to Asahi Beverages’ other Fire & Earth Ventures sites across Australia, including Pirate Life in Port Adelaide and 4 Pines in Brookvale, NSW, where Wayfarer kegs are already produced. These other sites have the capability to manage Green Beacon’s continued growth.

The closure of Geebung will result in the loss of three full-time and two casual positions. The remaining Geebung employees will transfer to the Teneriffe brewpub.

Green Beacon GM Richard Shrosbery said:

“Geebung has been our home for more than six years and has driven much of our recent success.

“However, we are experiencing significant growth and have now outgrown the site. Today’s announcement means Green Beacon can continue its growth trajectory by unlocking capacity constraints, which will help ensure we continue to get it to lovers of Green Beacon everywhere.

“We will still have a strong presence in Brisbane with the upgraded Green Beacon Brewpub in Teneriffe. And, under the watchful supervision of our chief brewer, all Green Beacon beers will retain their distinct and award-winning flavours.

“The team at Geebung have been tremendous and I am very proud of the contribution they’ve made to Green Beacon’s success.”

Asahi Beverages will provide career transition to employees who are impacted by redundancy.

A process is also underway to identify if there are suitable alternative roles within Asahi Beverages.

Classic beer Reschs Real Lager is set for a comeback as the pandemic-led nostalgia trend continues to influence thirsty beer drinkers’ tastes.

Reschs Real was produced from 1992 until 2000, but a passionate campaign by the NSW Reschs Appreciation Society has led to the heritage beer’s revival across NSW.

Brand Director Sarah Wilcox said “Reschs is a NSW local favourite and is attracting a wide range of drinkers who want to reminisce about the good times.

“We’ve listened to the fans. The Reschs Appreciation Society have been strong supporters of the brand and continue to shine a light on how much NSW loves this famous brand.

“There are two strong drivers. First, we’ve seen that consumers are reverting to what they know and love and want to support their local areas.

“Second, Reschs is attracting a new generation of beer drinkers who love classic beers and the nostalgic stories behind them.’’

Featuring the slogan “New taste. Real beer.” the revamped Reschs Real is 4.2 per cent alcohol content and will be sold in 330ml stubbies. Brewers describe the beer as a modern easy drinking take on the classic lager.

Reschs beer was started by German migrant Edmund Resch in 1897 in Sydney after he spent time working in minefields, hotels and other breweries across the country.

Reschs enjoyed its heyday in the mid-20th century, and the revival of Reschs Real for NSW drinkers only will build on the huge success of the return of its iconic Reschs Pilsener in the Silver Bullet can three years ago.

“NSW drinkers can thank the legions of loyal Reschs Appreciation Society fans for their extraordinary passion and hard work because they kick-started a revolution which everyone can now enjoy,’’ Wilcox said.

A spokesperson for the Reschs Appreciation Society said:

“The Reschs Appreciation Society is a grass-roots movement that was founded in 2009 because we were concerned that the circulation of the beer we loved was in decline. We’ve now got over 14,000 members and we’re growing every week.”

“Reschs Real is part of not only Reschs history but NSW history too. We’re delighted that it’s back for a new generation to enjoy.’’

THE BIG COLD BEER LAUNCHES NEW BIG BOLD BREW

Australia’s most iconic beer, Victoria Bitter, is today making one of its biggest announcements of the past century with a new twist on the beloved classic.

Victoria Bitter Xtra – or VX – goes on sale this week, comes in 250ml bottles and has 6% alcohol compared to 4.9% in classic VB. VX will be sold in four-packs of 250ml stubbies, which contain 1.2 standard drinks each. Our classic VB will be unchanged.

VX uses the same ingredients and retains the distinctive flavour beloved by Australians for generations. This new beer has a bolder and more intense taste than classic VB.

Victoria Bitter was first launched by Thomas Aitken at the Victoria Brewery in East Melbourne in 1854.

Brand Director Sarah Wilcox said:

“The VX launch comes as VB enjoys a resurgence, after beer lovers reverted to trusted brands during COVID.”

“We’ve launched VX to give beer lovers a slightly bolder and more intense version of the great VB taste they’ve enjoyed for generations. It is brewed to be enjoyed with mates and to offer more choices of great-tasting beer for various occasions.”

VX will feature a new red, white and black logo and the new slogan ‘For a Hard Earned Night’. It will be supported with TV, radio and online advertising that will keep the iconic Big Cold Beer anthem.

Wilcox added: “Australians are increasingly moderating their alcohol consumption – with almost 30% of Carlton & United Breweries’ beer sales now, zero, low and mid-strength beers. However, higher-alcohol beers are increasingly popular in the craft segment, and we think there’s a market among traditional beer lovers who also want bolder and more intense flavours. It’s all about choice.”

“We didn’t want to mess too much with the iconic VB recipe for the new VX. Beer lovers with long memories will remember we did that once before and we definitely won’t be rushing to do it again! This time we are listening to our consumers and giving them what they want.”

Victoria Bitter is a proud part of the Asahi Beverages family. VX will be on sale at major bottle shops from this week and will retail for $16 (RRP) for a four pack and around $60 (RRP) for a slab of stubbies.

A QUEENSLAND ICON RETURNS TO HERITAGE BANK STADIUM

Iconic Queensland beer Power’s will be the beer of choice at Heritage Bank Stadium in 2023 with the announcement that Carlton & United Breweries will continue their support of the Gold Coast SUNS in 2023. Iconic Queensland beer Power’s will be the beer of choice at Heritage Bank Stadium in 2023 with the announcement that Carlton & United Breweries will continue their support of the Gold Coast SUNS in 2023. It makes the SUNS the first Queensland sporting team to be sponsored by the new-look iconic Power’s beer.

Gold Coast SUNS players joined industry stakeholders for an impromptu kick comp to celebrate the return of a beer brewed especially for Queensland, by Queenslanders.

The Power’s brand always enjoyed a great affiliation with iconic Queensland sporting teams. Carlton & United Breweries’ Queensland State Manager, Ian Giles, said he’s been taken aback by the passionate response to the relaunch as Power’s bounces back to life.

“Now, Power’s beer is thrilled to support the Gold Coast SUNS in 2023 with the SUNS the first Queensland sporting team to be sponsored by the new-look iconic Power’s beer.

“Power’s was always associated with sport back in the day. Founder, Bernard Power, attributed their huge success to Power’s significant investment with local Queensland sporting identities, having sponsored the Broncos in their inaugural season and beyond in the late 80s and early 90s.

“I like to remind people that Queensland teams had a lot of success with Power’s as their sponsor, so here’s hoping that history repeats itself for the SUNS in 2023!

“The relaunch of the Power’s brand marks the return of a Queensland icon that celebrated our underdog spirit and showed the rest of Australia there was nothing Queenslanders couldn’t do!”

Power’s Ultra Smooth – a modern take on a true classic – will also have a dedicated, themed area within Heritage Bank Stadium called “The Power’s Pocket” – an exclusive match-day offering for Gold Coast SUNS home matches.

Gold Coast SUNS Chief Executive Mark Evans said the club was proud to partner with an iconic Queensland product.

“We’re a club for Queenslanders, so it’s only right that we have a Queensland beer on tap for Gold Coast SUNS home matches at Heritage Bank Stadium in 2023,” Evans said.

“I’m sure there will be an electric atmosphere in the Power’s Pocket this year for all 2023 Gold Coast SUNS home matches at Heritage Bank Stadium.”

This new smooth and crisp beer, specifically brewed for warm weather and modern tastes, features packaging that pays tribute to that pivotal time in Queensland’s history when Bernie Power built the Yatala Brewery in 1988 and shocked the southerners with his success!

Founder Bernie Power said:

“Making a beer that resonates with people is a challenging thing, and I know everyone involved in this has been very careful with what has ended up inside and outside the bottle.

“I am absolutely chuffed to see the Power’s brand returning. When I sold the brewery to CUB in 1993, we were more focused on the future of our staff than we were on the future of the brand. So to see it return, and hear what it means to people, has been a wonderful thing.”

Along with its classic flavour profile, the new Power’s Ultra Smooth has slight bitterness, balanced by a light rounded body, slight malt sweetness, a crisp, smooth, clean finish and 4% ABV. While some Power’s has been brewed over the past 20 years, it was available in limited quantities, with the original Power’s Bitter not brewed in over a decade and not available on tap since the early 2000s.

Power’s Ultra Smooth is being brewed at the original Yatala Brewery.

Carlton Draught is excited to launch the second instalment of its groundbreaking local football initiative ‘The Carlton Draft’.

Three-time premiership Lion Jonathan Brown will resume as Draft Commissioner, with Brown leading the charge on the recruitment of six AFL legends to pull on the boots for one final game.

In 2023, The Carlton Draft will be headlined by Nathan Buckley, one of the most decorated players the AFL has ever seen. In addition to his 280 AFL games of playing experience, the 2003 Brownlow Medallist and 2002 Norm Smith Medallist will also be a key contributor off field bringing 218 games of coaching experience to a lucky Victorian club.

Joining Buckley in The Carlton Draft is four-time premiership Hawk and 319-game superstar Jordan Lewis and dual best and fairest winner, Fox Footy media personality and 200-game veteran, Bernie Vince, with the remaining talent pool to be announced in the coming weeks.

Last year, The Carlton Draft created lasting memories for the nominated clubs and helped them get back on their feet after the pandemic, with local communities flocking to the games across Victoria.

This was highlighted by Dale Thomas’ heroic best-on-ground performance for the Nhill Tigers, willing them over the line for their first win in over 1,029 days and helping the club generate over $12,000 in revenue from the after-match activity alone.

Entries for the 2023 The Carlton Draft across Victoria are now open. To nominate your club head to http://www.thecarltondraft.com.au. Entries close March 27 with six winning clubs to be announced in early April.

The Carlton Draft will be broadcast live on Fox Footy in late April, with matchdays to commence from May 1.

Winning clubs will get a unique matchday experience when the community unites to watch an AFL legend play alongside their local superstars.

2022 Carlton Draft alumni Dale Thomas said:

“Playing for Nhill last year was one of the best footy moments that I have ever been a part of. The joy and smile on everyone’s face when the siren went is something that I will never forget, and to celebrate with a beer with the community and club members after the game was even more special.”

“To see a few familiar faces already commit for The Carlton Draft this year, it will be interesting to see if any of them can match my heroics from last year. Bucks is an ex-teammate of mine and I work on radio with Bernie so if they need any advice, they know who to chat with.”

Speaking on the launch of The Carlton Draft, Draft Commissioner Jonathan Brown said:

“The second iteration of The Carlton Draft continues Carlton Draught’s longstanding tradition of supporting grassroots footy clubs.

“We saw the impact that The Carlton Draft had on communities across Victoria last year, and to give six more lucky clubs the chance to have an ex-AFL legend lace up the boots for their club will be special.

“I think Bucks is in for a rude awakening when his game comes around, we know he keeps himself in good nick, so it is going to be fun to watch him run around and cop a few bumps along the way.”

The Carlton Draft nominee Nathan Buckley said:

“Local footy is the lifeblood of towns across Victoria, and to be able to play a role in bringing together a local community is something I am looking forward to.

“It is going to be a weird feeling being drafted again more than 30 years after being picked by the Brisbane Bears, but hopefully I will be able to dust away any cobwebs, get a couple of kicks and play my part in what will be a great day.”

Carlton & United Breweries, Head of Classic Beer Brands Sarah Wilcox said:

“We saw great success in last year’s campaign, which generated over $100,000 in revenue for the grassroots clubs involved. Victoria and local footy is so important to Carlton Draught and we can’t wait to see the 2023 Draft unfold.”

“With six new legends answering the call to arms in 2023, we’re excited to continue to strengthen Carlton Draught’s connection to local footy. Regardless of the result and no matter the outcome from the matches, all clubs can celebrate every game with a couple of Carlton Draughts in hand.”

“Carlton Draught is once again proud to work with the AFL, AFL Community, Fox Footy and the retired players to revive the community in and around local football clubs. Cheers and good luck to the class of 2023.”

To further extend their support for community footy on and off field, Carlton Draught will be running a major on-pack promotion across VIC in April, May and June.

Purchase specially marked packs of Carlton Draught and nominate your footy club to win one of five $10,000 cash prizes plus Sherrin footballs and Carlton Draught slabs.

Iconic Queensland beer Power’s will finally flow again across the Sunshine State, 35 years after a Brisbane publican built a brewery, took on the industry and hit the big time.

Two years in the planning, a new Power’s Ultra Smooth Lager will be sold at pubs, clubs and bottleshops – decades after it was last widely available. A new modern take on a true classic.

Power’s Ultra Smooth
is a new smooth and crisp beer specifically brewed for warm weather, modern tastes and with a packaging that pays tribute to the pivotal time in Queensland’s history when Bernie Power built the Yatala Brewery in 1988. The Sunshine State embraced one of their own and – when Power’s sponsored the Broncos in their inaugural season and beyond – together they wrote themselves into Queensland folklore.

Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) Queensland State Manager, Ian Giles, said:

“The relaunch of the Power’s brand marks the return of a Queensland icon that celebrated our underdog spirit and showed the rest of Australia there was nothing we couldn’t do.

“It was so popular that it sold out on day 1 and never returned to full stock, smashing all expectations to eventually capture about 20% of the Queensland beer market.

“People are yearning for simpler times, the pandemic is almost over and Queensland is well and truly open for business. Now is the right time to relaunch the Power’s brand so a new generation of beer lovers can enjoy this uniquely Queensland beer.”

Founder Bernie Power
said:

Power’s Ultra Smooth
is being brewed at the original Yatala Brewery.

First CEO of the Brisbane Broncos John Ribot agreed Power’s was one of the best comebacks in Queensland history:

“Power’s and the Brisbane Broncos were built on shared philosophies – a bunch of intrepid, gutsy Queenslanders with a whole lot of front and can-do attitude who ended up changing the state forever.

“Bernard privately provided the seed capital to the fledgling Broncos and the players took the Power’s partnership to another level. Alfie Langer once nominated himself Power’s customer service manager, turning up to customers’ houses with a six-pack.”

Brisbane publican Bob Singleton, owner of Brisbane’s Pineapple Hotel, said:

“People still speak reverentially about Bernie Power and how he launched a beer that helped change the state forever.

“Queensland is ready for the return of a state-based brand and Power’s is a brand that is Queensland to its core. Power’s is simply a great story that will bring back great memories for people of when Queenslanders got a unique beer they could truly call their own.

“But I’m just as excited about how good it tastes. The new liquid in the bottle is as good as the story behind it!”
Power’s Ultra Smooth Lager will be available across Queensland in stubbies as well as on tap from mid-February.

Australia’s oldest beer, Cascade Pale Ale, will celebrate 190 years of production in Tasmania by lighting up the Cascade Brewery in its signature green this December.

The historic milestone will also be marked with limited-edition commemorative packaging, modelled on the historic labelling of the long-loved beer, which features a photo of the brewery from the 1800’s.

The Cascade story began in 1824 when pioneering industrialist Peter Degraves used a 2000-acre grant to establish a sawmill on the lower slopes of Kunanyi/Mount Wellington in South Hobart. But, eight years and a short stint in gaol later, Degraves turned the site into a brewery and the Cascade legend was born

The location, at the junction of the Hobart and Guy Fawkes Rivulets, is known for its supply of fresh, clear mountain water – one of Cascade’s key ingredients and long-touted as a reason for its superior quality.

In fact, Tasmanian folklore recounts the tale of Cascade Pale Ale’s popularity. In 1849 notorious Tasmanian bushranger, Nugget Brown, held up a coach but apparently ignored the mailbags and passengers’ valuables in favour of a five-gallon keg of Cascade beer.

Brewery Manager Jesse Cartwright said the local love that Tasmanians have for Cascade and its Pale Ale is unparalleled.

“Affectionately known simply as ‘Green’, ‘Pale’ or ‘Degraves Ale’ after its founder, Cascade Pale Ale has cemented itself into the history books as a Tasmanian icon,” he said.

“It was the first beer brewed at the site in 1832 and has been brewed continuously ever since – except for a three-month stretch in 1967 after the devastating Black Tuesday fires nearly destroyed the brewery.

“As brewers, we pride ourselves on the longevity of our recipe for Cascade Pale Ale, which is still brewed at full strength at 5% ABV and from carefully-sourced products.”

Cascade Brewery is Australia’s oldest. It employs more than 50 people and supports 100s of local businesses, standing as a unique example of Australia’s industrial heritage.

The brewery, which is operated by Carlton & United Breweries and is part of the Asahi Beverages family, will celebrate 200 years in 2024.

“Cascade has been enjoyed by generation after generation after generation of Tasmanians. This is because we use the freshest water from Kunanyi/Mount Wellington, the finest local and Australian ingredients, and our enduring commitment to quality,” Mr Cartwright said.

The commemorative Cascade Pale Ale cases are on sale now at independent liquor retailers, including Thirsty Camel, 911, Big Bargain and Steve’s Liquor, only in Tasmania.

The heritage cases will also be available at BWS and Dan Murphy’s in January.

Collectors’ merchandise celebrating 190 years of Cascade Pale Ale is also available to purchase at the brewery bar.

The Abbotsford Brewery, Melbourne’s oldest and most well-known brewery, has brewed its 50 millionth beer using the power of the sun.

The sustainability milestone was achieved after the 118-year-old brewery installed more than 4000 solar panels.

The new system on the rooftops of the Abbotsford Brewery is the largest solar installation on a brewery in Victoria. It directly harnesses the sun to brew some of Australia’s favourite beers including Victoria Bitter, Carlton Draught, and Pure Blonde.

Hayden Turner, CUB’s Head of Classic Brands, said the panels were spread across 8800 square metres, half the area of the MCG playing surface, and will reduce our carbon emissions in Victoria by an estimated 48,000 tonnes over the next 25 years.

“We know Victorians want to drink beer that is brewed more sustainably, which is why we’ve undertaken this massive project,” he said.

“This is one of Melbourne’s most historic and revered manufacturing sites, having brewed beer since 1904 – a time when Clydesdale horses were the only way to transport VB and Carlton Draught around town and 50 years before the beer can was introduced to Australia!

So it wasn’t a simple task to install 4000 solar panels on the roofs, but we are now thrilled that this old brewery is a part of the renewable energy revolution.

“The beer itself hasn’t changed, with the same ingredients and brewing methods used. But Victorian beer lovers can now rest assured that the sun is now helping brew their favourite ice-cold beers.”

CUB is a proud part of the Asahi Beverages family. The 1.75 MWp installation at Abbotsford is a big step towards Asahi Beverages achieving its ambitious sustainability targets, including sourcing all its electricity across the country from renewable sources by 2025.

“While the solar panels are not enough to power the entire brewery, our goal is to ensure Abbotsford is powered entirely by a mix of directly-sourced and offset solar electricity by 2025,’’ Mr Turner said.

The project was led by Smart Commercial Solar in partnership with AMPYR Energy. Smart Commercial Solar General Manager Maximilian Stenning said it is one of the most complex projects the company has undertaken in Australia.

“Delivering a project of this scale for Australia’s leading beverages company underscores the commercial strength of solar,” he said.

“Renewables are now even more viable because of the need for energy resilience in today’s market. We completed the project with no
disruption to operations while working through the challenges posed by an operating brewery and pandemic. Asahi Beverages continues to be at the leading edge of a quickly emerging trend among organisations to embrace ambitious projects that realise economic benefits for the business while reducing the environmental impact of business operations.”
